We strongly believe in the power of plants as the best way to support health and performance, while doing our bit to reduce our impact on the environment and protect the lives of animals. As with any diet, it’s important to be mindful of some key nutrients, but at Holy we do all the hard work to make sure our meal plans are nutritionally complete. So, you can relax and enjoy our incredible food, knowing we’ve taken the guess work out for you, leaving you to experience all the well-documented benefits of plant-based eating.
Yes, our in-house nutritionist, TJ Waterfall, is an expert on all things to do with plant-based nutrition. Every step of the process has been carefully planned, and we use countless culinary techniques to boost levels of key micronutrients while ensuring levels of saturated fat, sugar and salt are kept to a minimum. All while packing in tonnes of flavour, of course!
As an entirely plant-based company, we naturally avoid many of the common allergens in animal products, so you won’t find milk, eggs, crustaceans, fish, or molluscs in any of our meals. Also, all the ingredients we source are free from gluten, lupin, and sulphites. However, we do include celery, sesame, peanuts, tree nuts, mustard and soya in some of our meals. Because we handle those products in the kitchen, we can’t guarantee that all meals will be free from traces of these, even if they aren’t listed in the ingredients.
Over 90% of the products we use are organic. However, because we choose to use some fortified foods in our recipes to help boost intakes of certain vitamins and minerals, and these products aren’t certified as organic, we can’t yet say that we are 100% organic.
Because Holy meals are made with the highest quality, fresh, organic ingredients, we deliver no more than 3 days of meals at a time
All the ingredients in our meals, including oats, pastas, and flours, are gluten free and we do not handle any gluten-containing products in our kitchen. We chose to do this so the growing number of people with coeliac disease, gluten sensitivity or gluten intolerance can enjoy our meals too. However, we are not yet officially gluten-free certified… but watch this space!
We recommend that our meals are kept in the fridge and consumed within 72 hours from delivery, or before the ‘best before’ date.
Some of our meals contain celery, sesame, peanuts, tree nuts, mustard and soya. Because we handle those products in the kitchen, we can’t guarantee that all meals will be free from traces of these, even if they are not listed in the ingredients. Unfortunately, we are unable to cater to customers that have allergies to any of these ingredients.
Yes, several meals contain soy in the form of tofu, tempeh, miso, tamari, and soy milk. These ingredients are high protein and low in saturated fat, and research shows soy is an incredibly healthy food. In fact, soy consumption has been linked with lower risk of cancer, heart disease and stroke, while protecting bone health and helping to support muscle growth. And no, strong research confirms that soy doesn’t affect hormone levels in men!
All of our meals are packed with the power of plants, and without any of the potentially detrimental components found in animal products. In fact, many of our meals contain 3-4 servings of your recommended 5-a-day of fruit and vegetables. They’ve also been nutritionist-designed to provide all the key nutrients on a plant-based diet.
Yes, we don’t use any animal products in our recipes, including dairy, eggs, or honey, and even the wine we use in some of our dishes is certified vegan.
Most of the meals are cooked, but some (such as our overnight oats and smoothies) are raw and designed to be enjoyed straight from the fridge. Each meal comes with preparation instructions.
Yes, while the recommended meal plans have been formulated to be the most nutritionally complete, we do also provide flexibility to change meals so that you can always have your perfect meal plan.
Yes, the menu changes every week so you never get bored of our meals.
The calorie content of each meal varies as some of the ingredients we use are more energy-dense than others. However, the total calorie content for each day of our lifestyle sets have been carefully designed to fall within a 100-calorie margin of your chosen lifestyle set.
We use many techniques to ensure the key nutrients on a plant-based diet are met, most of which are through boosting intakes of foods naturally high in those key nutrients. For instance, we incorporate Brazil nuts into several dishes to boost intake of selenium, and cruciferous vegetables which are excellent sources of calcium. We also use fortified ingredients like plant-based milks, nutritional yeast, and iodised salt to provide recommended intakes for vitamin B12, vitamin D, and iodine. We even go as far as combining nutrients as proven techniques to boost absorption of certain minerals!
We incorporate plenty of omega-3 fats into our meals, by using ingredients such as flaxseeds, chia seeds, hemp seeds and walnuts. Although there are no specific recommended intakes for omega-3 in the UK, there are some well documented health and performance benefits of incorporating marine-based omega-3 sources into the diet too. For some, this comes in the form of oily fish or fish oil supplements, but algae oil is a cruelty-free, sustainable option that has been shown to be just as effective, without the contamination of heavy metals and other pollutants in fish. We decided to provide this in the form of a tasty gummie rather than affecting the flavour of any of the meals.
We always strive to strike the perfect balance between flavour and optimal nutrition. We do use some oil in our cooking, as it really helps to marry flavours and improve texture and mouth-feel of some of our dishes. However, we keep oil to a minimum because we know it’s a concentrated source of calories. When we do use oil in our cooking, we primarily use British-grown, organic, cold-pressed rapeseed oil, which is another source of omega-3, with half the saturated fat even of olive oil! Most companies choose cheaper oils, and lots of it, in their meals, but at Holy, your health is our priority.
At Holy, we’re both health conscious and passionate foodies, and we feel this is another area where it’s important to strike the balance between the two. Where we require sweetness in our meals, this usually comes from whole food sources. However, in some of our more decadent recipes, a small amount of added sugar is added, but still at much lower levels than you’d typically find in shop-bought versions!
